20% off-the-job update and support to young apprentices
The government has published new infographics and advice on what apprenticeship 20 per cent off-the-job rule means and doesn’t mean and how better support young people. These simple documents are mainly aimed at employers but are useful material for union reps to get to grips with relevant rules and opportunities in the workplace.
A flowchart helps employers determine which activities count as off-the-job training, and a myth-busting document to counter five common myths. To supplement the myth-busting document, the government is tweeting also a series of myth-busting infographics. An updated guidance of the main off-the-job training guidance is in the pipeline as well and will soon be available gov.uk.
The government wants to highlight that young apprentices provide opportunities for employers to grow their own and develop new talent. However, some young people may need some additional support to settle in to the workplace and reach their potential. The new guide aims to help employers provide effective support for apprentices aged 16 to 24. It includes:
- steps employers can take to make their recruitment practices accessible for young people
- examples of on-the-job support for young apprentices in the workplace
- information on sources of additional funding which employers can use to support young apprentices.
