Developing Digital skills to support workers going paperless
Like many other companies, Tesco is moving to paperless payslips. And some staff, like those in many other companies, don’t have the confidence or skills to make the change – but Usdaw has been there to support members gain the digital skills needed.
Usdaw reps and ULRs are doing a lot of work to provide staff with support and training. Usdaw has developed a guide for Tesco payslips going online and some reps and Mobile Union Learning Reps (MULRs) are using it to run workshops in store for those staff who want help and support.
Take Kylie Wrigley, a MULR in the North West Division. Kylie said:
I was on a Check Out Learning day when I first became aware that some of the staff didn’t understand how to do the online payslips.”
I started to show a couple of staff how to get on to the website and this developed into doing workshops”.
The workshops were a success in one store, so Kylie started to roll it out to other stores. Kylie explained:
I started to hit a wall with this because of some changes in the stores. I didn’t know how to get the workshops in to store and nobody else seemed to have a way round the problem.”
Then Kylie went to went to a big Store Director meeting.
I went up to one of the people partners (Tesco personnel staff) and we started talking about the workshops I had been doing on the online payslips. She thought it was a great idea and said she would tell the other people partners all about what I do.”
Sure enough, she e-mailed all the people partners on how Kylie could help them and gave her their e-mail addresses, so she could contact them directly. It was a good way to break the logjam and soon Kylie had 3 new workshops booked in at different stores.
This is just the start as Kylie says:
I hope to get a lot more workshops in with these stores and hopefully and branch out into other stores through this network.”
